The Master’s of Education in Secondary Education (SEED) program provides students with the specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to meet the educational needs of students in grades 6-12.
 
The comprehensive program of study includes methods courses designed to prepare reflective teachers who are dedicated to knowing their students and their needs. Collaborations and partnerships with Northern Virginia schools ensure secondary education student complete relevant clinical experiences with experienced mentor teachers. Dedicated content area ensure graduates are prepared to employ innovative, research-based pedagogical practices in diverse school settings.
 
The Secondary Education program offers pathways to obtain an initial Virginia license (Post-Graduate Professional License) to teach biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, English, history and social science, mathematics, and physics. The Secondary Education program also offers an MEd without licensure/concentration.

Admissions

  • All students will be required to fulfill the graduate admission requirements of the University. Applicants must submit:
  • Graduate application and fee
  • 750- to 1,000-word written statement of your goals and interest in the program
  • Current resume
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts from all previous institutions attended in the United States. 
    • Applicants with transcripts from institutions outside of the United States could have additional requirements.

Applicants to all graduate programs at George Mason University must meet the admission standards and application requirements for graduate study as specified in Graduate Admissions Policies and Bachelor's/Accelerated Master's Degree policies. Students will be considered for admission into the BAM Pathway after completion of a minimum of 60 credits, and additional unit-specific criteria.

Students who are accepted into the BAM Pathway will be allowed to register for graduate level courses after successful completion of a minimum of 75 undergraduate credits and course-specific pre-requisites.

Accelerated Master’s Admission Requirements

Undergraduate students already admitted to the BAM Pathway will be admitted to the intended master’s program, if they have met the following criteria, that will be verified:

  • Submission of BAM Transition Form by stated deadline
  • Sufficient minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA for conferred undergraduate degree (which does not include any earned reserve graduate credits)
  • Sufficient minimum major area GPA (if applicable for undergraduate degree conferral)
  • Completion of specific undergraduate coursework, approved advanced standing courses and any reserve graduate courses that have met the minimum grade requirement of B-
  • Successful completion of required minimum of 120 credits needed for undergraduate degree conferral (after exclusion of any satisfactory reserve graduate credits earned) 
  • Successfully meeting George Mason's requirements for undergraduate degree conferral (graduation) and completing the application for graduation.

Accelerated Pathway Requirements

To maintain the integrity and quality of both the undergraduate and graduate degree programs, undergraduate students interested in taking graduate courses must choose from the following which can be taken as Advanced Standing or Reserve Graduate credit (to be determined by the student and their advisor):
