The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for PK-12 Practitioners is designed to provide theoretical foundations and culturally and linguistically responsive practices for teaching English learners.
Coursework emphasizes the intersection of culture, language, and identity, and its application to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse PK-12 learners. Each course includes fieldwork, offering opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills gained in coursework to teaching and learning with English learners. This certificate is ideal for in-service, licensed PK-12 teachers, as well as instructional assistants seeking to deepen their expertise in working with English learners. Additionally, it prepares licensed teachers to sit for the Praxis Subject Assessment in English to Speakers of Other Languages, which is required by the Virginia Department of Education for obtaining an add-on ESL endorsement.
