It provides a peer-supported first-year transition experience that helps deepen student engagement in domains such as Community Involvement, Anti-Racism & Inclusive Excellence, and Career & Major Exploration. INYO 105: U.S. American Cultures. 3 credits.
This course provides an introduction to US cultures with a focus on diversity within U.S. American society. The course uses the concept of culture as a basis for discussing differences in Americans' experience of family life, work, education, the arts, national and ethnic identities, gender, religion and more. Through ethnographic readings, literature, film and field projects, students develop a better understanding of similarities and differences across the American experience. Offered by INTO Mason. INYO 106 introduces students to primary research methods through critical perspectives that explore the craft of research historically and in relation to global power structures. Students conduct primary research on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through conducting and reflecting on research, they develop foundational skills for critical thinking, academic reading, data collection and analysis, and writing about research. The Multilingual learners mentoring practicum supports goal #12 of Mason’s strategic plan: “building a community that fosters global learning, creates global understanding, and seeks global impact.” Students in this course mentor multilingual learners on campus, helping them adjust to the culture of Mason and Northern Virginia and connecting them with campus resources while developing intercultural competence, listening, and mentoring skills. Designed for the Graduate International Pathways program, this course is the first of a two-part transitional course series for international students. Notes: This course is for graduate students whose highest degree is from a non-US institution. This course may not count towards academic degree requirements at the graduate level. INYO 505: Intercultural Competence and Professional Development for Multilingual Graduate Students. 1 credit.
INYO 505 enables students to learn and reflect on intercultural competence, to join and to contribute to an inclusive academic community, to further experience diverse university cultures, and to continue professional development in the INTO Mason Graduate Pathway Programs. Through intercultural dialogues, peer reviews, reflections, and journaling, students engage in awareness of self and others and aim to develop diverse relationships within the academic environment. Through intentional and directed campus engagement, students learn how to become members of the campus community and to participate professionally within their disciplines.
