This course considers arguments for the importance and worth of the arts, focusing on the primary or inherent values of the arts, the study of these benefits and their status as public goods. Students analyze and argue for the contributions of the arts. Taking part in critical dialogue and guided critique, students develop their abilities to recognize, describe, and interpret artistic form across the range of CVPA disciplines, including music, visual arts, dance, film, writing, theatre, and game design. This course provides an opportunity for students to explore and develop a variety of modes for communicating one’s practice across the Arts. The course will cover written, visual, and oral modes of communication. Assignments will include exercises such as artist or concept statements, reviews, elevator pitches, public presentations, proposals, podcasts, and graphic reports. Students will learn about the range of audiences for their communications and how to modify those communications for different stakeholders.   Offered by Coll Visual & Performing Arts. This course focuses on a central question which will rotate annually. Students will explore how artists and the Arts respond to theoretical constructs and their operationalization. Students will engage in case study and analysis of artistic and organizational practice and will discuss how artists have innovated and/or opposed these frameworks and examine how theory applies to questions related to historical and current topics.
