The Smart Grid Technology Graduate Certificate focuses on essential technologies for modernizing power grids and enhancing grid reliability, efficiency, and security. Students will learn key technologies, including smart grid protection, IEC 61850 standard implementation, synchrophasor technology, data analytics, and cyber-physical security. This certificate empowers professionals to contribute to the development and implementation of smart grid solutions, facilitating the transition to a more efficient, reliable, and secure energy future. The certificate can be completed entirely online or in person within two semesters, and the coursework can be applied toward an MS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. The target audience includes current and prospective students in Mason’s MS programs in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, System Engineering, and Cybersecurity Engineering, with a focus on smart grid technology. Additionally, the certificate is tailored for utility and energy sector professionals, as well as data center engineers, allowing them to upskill and stay abreast of the latest advancements in smart grid technology.

Admissions

The graduate certificate is open to all students who hold baccalaureate degrees in scientific and engineering disciplines from accredited universities in accordance with Graduate Admission Requirements. Non-degree graduate students are welcome to apply. Current degree seeking students in the College of Engineering and Computing may request admission as a secondary degree.

Policies

A cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required, and at most one course with a grade of C may be applied toward the certificate.
