Mission
The School of Theater at George Mason University provides students with a dynamic and collaborative program in an inclusive learning environment which promotes creativity, initiative, and greater awareness of diverse identities and cultural experiences. Whether study in the School of Theater at George Mason University leads to a career in professional theater or enriches a future elsewhere, we engage the whole artist-citizen by combining practical training and liberal arts education. Our students learn through classroom instruction, individualized mentorship and hands-on experience while contributing to the success of thought-provoking plays and musicals in multiple venues.
Undergraduate Programs
Theater BA and BFA
The School of Theater offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees. The Bachelor of Arts offers students a broad liberal arts engagement while the Bachelor of Fine Arts offers immersive engagement within a specific discipline.
Theater BA
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree supports the breadth of a liberal arts education in the belief that such study, combined with serious practical training and experience, offers the best preparation for a life in theater, on stage and screen, or beyond. BA students are encouraged to follow their passions within theater aligning advanced coursework in one area of study or electing to explore various disciplines within the field. BA students are also encouraged to expand other interests across the university through their general electives, minors, or additional majors.
Theater BFA Concentrations
The Bachelor of Fine Arts prepares students for graduate study or entry into the profession through rigorous, concentrated, and individualized training. Theater majors pursuing a BFA degree complete a concentration in one of the following areas: Design for Stage and Screen, Performance for Stage and Screen, Musical Theater Performance, Sound Engineering and Design, or Theater Education for Theater Arts PK-12.
Certification for Theater Education for Theater Arts PK-12
The Theater Education for Theater Arts PK-12 concentration is approved by the Virginia State Department of Education and administered through the College of Education and Human Development, which is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
