Credit by Exam

The Office of Admissions awards transfer credit for several advanced standing examinations based upon minimum score requirements established by Mason academic departments.  Additional credit by exam information is available on the Office of Admissions homepage.

Mason Departmental Exams

Proficiency exams are offered in a number of courses usually taken during the first two years. Students may not earn Mason credit by exam for courses in which they are currently enrolled beyond the time allotted to add courses in that semester, or for courses already audited or failed at the university. Transfer students may not earn by exam any part of the 30 credits that must be completed at Mason to earn a degree.

English 101 and English 302 Proficiency Testing

The Department of English offers proficiency testing for ENGH 101 Composition (Mason Core) and ENGH 302 Advanced Composition (Mason Core).  Requirements and testing dates are available on the department homepage.

Modern and Classical Language (MCL) Placement

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers foreign language placement testing to determine the appropriate course level for students pursuing one of the many languages offered by the department.  Additionally, the department offers foreign language waiver testing.  Detailed testing information is available on the MCL homepage.

Math Placement Exam

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers online placement testing for several math courses that satisfy the Mason Core Quantitative Reasoning requirement.  Most new students complete placement testing during orientation.  Testing requirements and resources are available on the department homepage.
